Aloe Vera in ground

This is a versatile succulent with approximately 500 different species around the world. It has topical and medicinal properties and easy to grow in any climate, likes morning sun and bright, indirect light if grown indoors. If you see orange on the leaves, your plant is getting too much sun. It needs well drained soil and a cactus mix is ideal with low to medium watering and likes to be a little pot bound in containers. They don't need a lot of fertiliser (Spring and late Summer) and propagation is by removing pups.

It is antibacterial, an antioxidant and nutrient dense with 20 minerals, 12 vitamins and phytonutrients and has a high concentration of vitamins A, C and E which help in anti-ageing, collagen production and fighting against free radical damage from UV radiation, etc.

Aloe is one of the best humectants (draws in moisture and holds it in) making it an excellent moisturiser and has been used for centuries to treat minor cuts, wounds and is excellent for soothing the UV effects of sunburn due to the Aloin content which has anti-inflammatory and antioxidants speeding up wound healing and collagen production.

Aloe Vera cutIt's one of the best moisturisers for acne as it doesn't clog pores which is the prime cause of acne and assists in the removal of dirt and oil from pores. Also restorative for conditions such as psoriasis and eczema, is unlikely to cause allergic reactions and you can't use too much.

Aloe has medicinal properties and a juice can be made by blending gel (purchased or grown) with water and used as a drink or tonic for digestion, acid reflux, GERD, stomach ulcers, inflammation and constipation. Honey, lemon, ginger or mint can be added to enhance flavour and benefits.

As usual, anything taken internally or put on your skin should be fully researched and a personal decision made to decide if it's suitable for yourself.
